Quaker-parot eats newspaper!?

we have newspaper on the bottom of his cage to catch his poop. he literally lifts the screen to nibble on the paper! why is this. also we have put all sorts of different mineral bars in it nut he wont touch any of them. he seems pretty happy. recently iv been finding alot of (new?) feathers. they are like strait and have a waxy coating a pinch it and the coating falls off and the feather fans out beautifully.
